The BeachHut 14 – Turning Ideas Into Inventions

Updated: Jul 14, 2020

If you’re like me, you’ve probably been looking in the media and seeing new apps and inventions come out and thought to yourself: I had the idea for that! Consider Uber for example. Many people came and told me after Uber started to grow that they had the idea of letting people use their cars to do rideshare.

Well, here’s the hard truth. It doesn’t matter if you had a great idea, it matters if you took the time and effort to capitalize on the idea. There are millions of inventions yet to be created; you have to remember that it is possible to have an original idea. That’s not enough though; you must take the time to create your idea.

At K Ventures, we are here to help you turn your idea into reality. I recently had an experience where I turned an idea I had into a tangible invention – it came to me as I spent my quarantine on the beach.

Spending Quarantine on the Beach

When the world began to close down, many people struggled to know what they should do. Jobs were being lost all over the world and many people have struggled to make the money their families need in order to survive. It has been an extremely difficult time for everyone worldwide. I was lucky enough to be quarantined in a beach town, where I was able to lounge around and relax for a time.

Even so, I struggled because I knew I still needed to provide for myself and my family. All I had with me was my mind and the internet, so I decided to act. While at the beach, I often wanted to take a dip in the water, but I didn’t want to leave my electronics like my phone, iPod, and keys back at shore. I started to think of different ways I could keep them safe in the water without putting them at risk.

Hitting the Drawing Board

When I realized the issue I had was probably something that had been experienced by people around the world, I knew I was on to something. Here’s the first thing we can learn from this: your inventions will be best when they are a direct solution to a problem many people are experiencing. I went and began sketching a mini boat, something that would float and carry my electronics next to me whenever I wanted to go into a lake or into the ocean.

I am not much of an artist, but I created the first sketches of what I envisioned would look good next to me in the ocean. I wanted the mini boat to be portable but still be large enough to carry a phone, an iPod, keys, chargers, and even a power bank. After coming up with some basic sketches, I began looking for ways to design a logo and create a 3D model for the invention. I set a $500 budget for the entire project, which would help me keep all of my expenses in line.

Creating Designs and Logos

Creating models would be extremely difficult for many people, but luckily, we are no longer alone. Using my network of freelancers, I found help in creating models for my mini boat idea. I also found inexpensive freelancers that would help me create a logo for my idea. The boat looked like a hut you would find on the beach, and my lucky number is 14, so I named the idea the BeachHut 14.

Even though there are similar ideas out there, my invention is unique because it combines quality and safety with elegance and style. After having help, I began the hunt to find cheap but quality manufacturers to make prototypes for my idea.

Finding Manufacturers

At this point, I was far under the budget I had originally set. You must understand that too many people think it is extremely expensive to create new inventions; it’s not nearly as expensive as you might have thought.

Once I had the sketches that I needed for my idea, I contacted my suppliers in China and began to develop prototypes. I had them print two for me and once I receive them, I will be able to tweak them and prep them for mass production. All of my final designs and everything I need to complete my project are done for far less than my original budget.

What You Can Learn

Hopefully, after looking at my experience, you’ve found some things you can learn and use for your own businesses. In order to find a product that people will buy, you need to be solving their problems. If you can find a problem that many people are experiencing, you can create a solution and make money.

You don’t need as much money as people think to get your product off the ground; there are tons of ways to fundraise before you’ve even sent out products, too. If you have the internet, you can create a Kickstarter campaign and raise funds before you’ve even made the product. Of course, all of this is dependent on your ability to network.

How K-Ventures Can Help

That’s where we come in. At K Ventures, we have the network and ability to connect you with the suppliers and freelancers you need to make your product a reality. Just like I couldn’t have created my mini boat alone, you won’t be able to get your product off the ground without some help. We offer inexpensive help to make your idea a reality. We will also help you build your website and your online presence, so your brand gets the attention it needs.

Final Thoughts

There is no reason why your idea can’t become a reality. The only thing standing in your way is you. Even though it might seem impossible when you’re just dreaming of it, we have the experience you need to help you from the beginning to the end.

Note: here is a twitter thread that shows the stages and progress when I was creating the product.
